IMAGES FROM THE FLOATING WORLD
This work is the product of my interest in the art and culture of
Japan, particularly the imagery found in Japanese textile designs
and color wood-block prints during the Edo period in Japan, 1603-
1867. It was a time of peace and prosperity in which the popular
pleasures of living were depicted in art. The images in the design
of this time came from nature and everyday living. They included
landscapes, snowscapes, birds, flowers, animals, insects, beautiful
women and myths that gave shape to a people and a culture.
Now Edo is gone. Yet, here in our midst are images of a Floating
World to be viewed by us in a different culture at a much later time.
It has been my hope in these paintings that we will see reflected in
them not only scenes from a remote and foreign past but ourselves,
our passing concerns and our own Floating World.
This series of paintings has been exhibited in the Baltimore,
Washington area and consists of 13 different works which are all in
private collections.
